2009 Annual Report

We’re grateful to report that 2009 has been a year of strong philanthropic support for Peking University Education Foundation (USA), despite the challenging economic conditions.

In 2009, PKUEF (USA) received a total of $3.58 million from 288 gifts in 2009, which mainly fromfoundations, individuals, corporations and other institutions.

In 2009, foundations remain the major source of all the donations received by PKUEF (USA). Donations from foundations account for about 83% of the total gifts. 81% of our donors are alumni of Peking University. Donations received by PKUEF (USA) in 2009 were mainly distributed in the areas of Research &Training, Capital Projects and Scholarships, which makes up 41%, 29% and 24% of the total amount respectively.

Our principal gifts in 2009 come from the Leo KoGuan Foundation, Wallace H. Coulter Foundation and J. T. Tai& Co. Foundation. Besides, Mr. and Mrs. Chen Hong, Golden Agri International, Kenneth Fong Family Fund and Madam Helen Woo also provide substantial support for PKUEF (USA).

In 2009, PKUEF (USA) established 6 new Scholarship Funds and granted 19 Scholarships to promote education at Peking University to for the most gifted students and prepare them to embrace the future. PKUEF (USA) also granted 8 Alumni Funds and Class Gifts, 6 Teaching and Research Funds, 2 Capital Projects Funds, 2 International Exchange Funds and 1 Faculty Support Funds.
We were all saddened by the deadly earthquake in May, 2008, and we are grateful that our alumni and friends joined us in raising funds to rebuild schools in the earthquake stricken area. Peking University Education Foundation (USA) received 624 gifts from 561 individuals and organizations (matching gifts were added to the corresponding donors), totaling $ 517,038.57 for the China Earthquake Relief Fund as of May 20, 2009. Based on many discussions and surveys, and with cooperation of Peking University, we chose Beijie Primary School in Guangyuan, Sichuan as the beneficiary of this fund. The teaching building for Beijing Primary School will be completed in 2010.

PKUEF(USA) also works to promote international communication in education and culture. PKUEF (USA) presented its annual gala on June 26, 2009. Peking University President Zhou Qifeng attended the event and delivered the keynote speech to more than 200 PKU alumni and friends.

At the Weiming Forum jointly organized by PKUEF (USA) and PKUAA-NC, Prof. Hai Wen, Vice President of Peking University and also a renowned professor of economics delivered a wildly-hailed lectur on the global financial crisis to about 400 audience in the Bay Area.
